KUCHING, June 13: The humble bowl of Laksa Sarawak has the great potential to reach a global acclaim.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said similar to that of other dishes around the region, the ‘Breakfast of the Gods’ and other local cuisine can help promote Sarawak’s gastronomy tourism.
“Just as Thailand’s pad thai and Vietnam’s beef pho have gained global acclaim, we believe our Sarawak laksa holds the potential for similar recognition,” he said in his speech which was read by his deputy, Datuk Sebastian Ting at the launch of SAGO Incubator 2023 here, today.
Karim said F&B industry – being the second highest tourism expenditure in Sarawak – is becoming more crucial to the state’s economy and its tourism sector.
He added that Kuching’s recent recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy is a testament to its rich gastronomic heritage.
“The recognition confirms the remarkable untapped possibilities within our culinary treasures.
For Karim, tourism and food are intricately linked – which combines to showcase the identity and culture of a destination.
“Today, tourists seek out extraordinary experiences that go beyond landmarks, and they cherish the opportunity to immerse themselves in unique culinary encounters.
“As we continue to develop and promote our gastronomic treasures, we strive to position Sarawak as a premier food and tourism destination,” he quipped.
On the programme, Karim said it cultivates not only culinary talents but also nurture sustainability and responsible practices.
