Enhancing community engagement in fire prevention

SERIAN, 27 Dec: Better synergy between the community and the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) can be enhanced through volunteerism.

As such, the community presence can make a real difference in assisting on emergencies as well as non-emergency tasks.

Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee said utilising community support helps for better partnerships through corporate social responsibilities programme on advocating safety and focusing on the well-being of the people.

“Fire prevention measures can be introduced through the programme on fire risk management and prevention especially in rural areas.

“In a situation that there is a fire at the initial stage, through this programme, it is hoped that villagers will take the initiative to make full use of these fire extinguishers to put out the fire while waiting for the fire department to come,” she said this when offiating a CSR programme at the Gedong Community Hall, today.

She pointed out that in Gedong, the nearest fire station is in Simunjan, which is 20 minutes away, and with the availability of the amenities would help in fire prevention and management.

Rodiyah added that with more programmes available better engagement and between the community and Bomba can be improve especially at involving youths at gaining greater awareness towards the issue.

“I hope that in the future, the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) and Village Security and Development Committees (JKKK) will work on an awareness programme towards fire mitigation measures.”

“With a CSR programme organised by private sectors, and the implementation of awareness as well as educating the locals in the right manner, this would enable villagers to handle the situation well in times of distress,” she noted.

Meanwhile, Saraneo Holdings Sdn.Bhd,Chief Operating Officer (COO) Ahmad Luqman B.Tambi said that the new model of fire extinguishers presented are eco-friendly products were formulated with conservation and preservation of the environment in mind.

In line with the state government’s efforts on implementing the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030), with environmental sustainability as one of its pillars.

“Our latest products, is in line with the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s idea on encouraging every sectors to go green in order to protect our environment for the betterment of our future generations,” he said.

A total of 72 fire extinguishers, two models of fire extinguishers namely, 40 units of JE-50 and 32 units of K180 were handed out to communities at the Gedong Community Hall earlier today.
