KUCHING, Dec 23: Singing Christmas songs in a unique soulful and jazzy style by The Band Lab Jazz Ensemble tonight (Dec 23).
Making its debut the band is set to jazz up the Christmas spirit at 7pm at Aeon Mall and at 8.30pm at Vivacity Megamall here.
Among the songs to be performed are Here Comes Santa Claus, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year and This Christmas.
Apart from serenading public through its live performance, members of the band will also be handing out candy packs to the audiences, celebrating the time for giving.
Since its establishment in 2018, it has conducted various outreach initiatives throughout Sarawak, including the state’s inaugural Kuching Youth Band Fiesta — a week-long band outreach and educational programme involving over 80 participants from across 4 cities.
It has also performed at various integral events such as the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Office Launching and the International Conference on Responsible Tourism and Hospitality 2022.
The Band Lab is Sarawak’s first and only community-based wind band program whose mission is to empower youths through music education has produced batches of wind musicians who perform regularly with the Sarawak State Symphony Orchestra (SONS).
Despite its tender age, The Band Lab is a proud recipient of multiple major awards including the Gold Award at the Kuching Concert Band Festival and more importantly, the coveted Malaysian Wind Prize in 2019.
More recently, its ensembles also won the overall champion in the percussion ensemble (senior division) and first runner up in the mixed ensemble (open division) at the 2021 Malaysia International Virtual Band Championships, outperforming hundreds of other participants from over 22 countries.
With members from ages 12 to over 50, and from different backgrounds, including alumni from local schools bands such as St. Joseph’s School Band and Sainsku Winds.
The Band Lab aspires to continue raising awareness of wind music and inspire the culture of music making amongst the community in Sarawak.
