KUCHING, May 26 : Sarawak pledge aims to cut carbon emission by 45 per cent 2030, marking a crucial step in tackling climate change.
Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the initiaves ushered through the establishment of Low Carbon Society Blueprint in Cities and Towns involving Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.
Would ensure low-carbon lifestyles are practiced and that green economy are implemented in line with PCDS 2030.
“Our goal is to create five percent green-based job opportunities, establishing five percent Small and Medium Enterprises where their businesses are eco-friendly, increasing infrastructure resilience to climate change by 80 percent and maintaining a clean Air Pollution Index (API) daily below the 50 mark.
“Other studies undertaken to identify air pollutants in the state namely; Assimilative Capacity Analysis of Air Pollutants in Kuching and Bintulu. This will ensure Sarawak’s air quality will achieve the standard the federal have set via its Malaysia Ambient Air Quality Standard (MAAQS),” he said this in his winding-up speech during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Thursday.
Tengah who is also the Second Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development noted that the state did not experience severe cases of haze for past two years.
Additionally, to maintain and monitor the occurrence of transboundry haze, a new Air Quality Monitoring Station in Bario, completed in January 2022.-TVS
