KUCHING, May 26 : A total of 72 compounds were issued between 2020 to 2022 following the violation of laws related to Totally Protected Areas (TPA) in Sarawak.

This brought to grand total of RM246,450 while 126 cases are still being investigated.

Second Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said since his ministry took charge of the management and enforcement of TPAs, the Sarawak Forestry Corporation has established the Enforcement and Protection Team (PPP).

“The team has since been working together with several enforcement agencies such as Forestry Department, Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM) and the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).

“Though the virality of COVID-19 hindered movements due to Movement Control Order (MCO), any violations to our TPAs are still enforced,” said the Deputy Premier during his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Thursday.

Tengah added various awareness and educational programme on environmental sustainability have been carried out, including the Electrical and Electronic Waste (BEE) Campaign 2022 where a total of 89 metric tonnes of BEE were collected through the initiative. – TVS
