KUCHING, May 20: Two proposed projects namely New Lawas WTP (20 MLD) and New Trusan WTP (50 MLD) are expected to resolved the water issues in Lawas.
The projects proposed under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP) is a long term solution to accommodate the demand.
Whereby, water shortage remains an unresolved issue in Lawas despite the completion of the Water Treatment Plant in Trusan.
The Water Treatment Plant, which was commissioned in 2013 aimed to supply treated water to the whole of Lawas district.
However, due to the inability of the plant to meet the demand, residents in Lawas continue to be plagued by water shortage issue.
As such, two projects were implemented under Projek Rakyat in the effort to increase the production capacity for treated water supply in Lawas.
“The first project is the upgrading of the existing Trusan Regional WTP from 20 million litres per day (MLD) to 40 MLD,” said Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Utility) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi when responding to a question posted by Ba’ Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian in the State Legislative Assembly sitting today.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Additionally, rehabilitation works and the re-commissioning of 5 MLD Gelugus WTP has also been completed. –TVS
