KUCHING, May 12: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Somalia’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MoEWR) to further boost the utilities sector in the republic.
Through the partnership, UNIMAS will spearhead activities related to research and development as well as human capital building in areas of water and energy in Somalia.
The MOU was signed by UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi and the Director General of MoEWR, Abdirizak Mohamed Muhumed.
“I am confident that this collaboration shall follow the footsteps of our other successful efforts in bringing significant impacts to the community,” said Kadim.
He said UNIMAS’ experience in water and energy developments in Sarawak such as the UNIMAS Water Centre and Sarawak Alternative Water Supply (SAWAS) will be able to support MoEWR’s initiative and aspirations in the commodity sector.
Meanwhile, Abdirizak in his speech thanked UNIMAS for the collaboration and looked forward to the planned programs.
“Somalia’s electricity sector faces many challenges that hinder the development of the country,” said Abdirizak.
“To address this, we have come today to discuss potential collaboration with UNIMAS with the aim to assist the MoEWR in the short and long term,” he added.
The MOU ceremony was also attended by delegations from MoEWR and UNIMAS staff. – TVS
