Borneo Jazz Festival lineup announced

KUCHING, May 9 : The Borneo Jazz festival which enters its 17th edition has announced its lineup with prodigious names in jazz such as Afro Asia and Steve Thornton from the United States, Gecko & Tokage Parade from Japan, Alemay Fernandez from Singapore and more are expected to appear.

Back after a two-year hiatus, this year’s festival themed “Jazz in The Jungle”, targets 3,000 visitors for the three-day event taking place at Coco Cabana, Miri from June 24th to 26th.

“It is going to be a hybrid event, where we combined both the physical and online event.

“Although we have lifted our border restrictions, it is a real test for the industry and the festival to bring in visitors to Sarawak,” said Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) CEO, Datu Sharzede Salleh Askor.

Meanwhile, the event artistic director, Evelyn Hii, said visitors could expect a cross-generational genre lineup from soul to bossa nova, new jazz to hip hop.

Visitors can also look forward to the pre-festival activities in the lead-up to the main event such as the Eco Drum Workshop, Borneo Boat Lute Exhibition and Miri Sape Movement performances, performed by professional Sape artists.

Aimed at promoting Sape to the youths, the performance will showcase between 12 to 15 young and veteran Sape players from various native ethnicity from Sarawak and Kalimantan.

The Sape Movement performance will be arranged by Anderson Kalang and Garry Sudom Raymond, who were among the co-founders of KL Sape Collective.

Tickets for Borneo Jazz Festival are on sale from 22 April from their official site.

For the public category, 1-Day Pass is priced at RM128 per ticket, 2-Day Pass is RM228 per ticket and 3-Day Pass is RM338 per ticket.

As for students and senior citizens, 1-Day Pass is priced at RM88 per ticket, 2-Day
Pass is RM128 per ticket and 3-Day Pass is RM188 per ticket. – TVS
