KUCHING, DECEMBER 2: Sarawak has added another direct flight today, welcoming Malaysia Airline’s (MAS) inaugural flight from Penang to Kuching.
Witnessed by the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, the route will play a major role in driving both the economy of both UNESCO-recognised cities especially in the tourism sector.
During the press conference, Karim established a concern of connectivity in Sarawak, as it has always been a challenge for Sarawak, be it by land, water or air.
By connecting Penang and Kuching, it will establish greater mobility between the two cities that will benefit the economic growth of both destinations.
“This will be the perfect opportunity for tourists from Penang to experience all of Sarawak’s unique attraction.
“Visitors can now enjoy the best offerings of both cities blessed with the abundance of culture, adventure, nature food and festivals from East to West,” said Karim.
He also assured that stringent SOPs will be enforced whilst giving exemption for fully vaccinated domestic travellers.
“Travellers who have completed their COVID-19 vaccination will be allowed to enter Sarawak without a quarantine order not would they have to undergo any COVID-19 screening test.
“However, for non-Sarawakian tourist, they would need to complete the e-Health declaration form and also the ‘Enter Sarawak’ form,” Karim added.
Also present during the ceremony were MAS Head of Sales, Roslan Ismail, Permanent Secretary and STB Deputy Chairman, Hii Chang Kee, Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) Sharzede Datu Haji Salleh Askor and Maswings Chief Executive Officer, Captain Nasaruddin A. Bakar.
