Public Opinion: Surveillance during driving tests.

Wong Jin Sern, Fresh Graduate.

KUCHING, SEPTEMBER 24: Since the announcement to install sensors and security cameras in cars used for driving tests were announced, it has been met with differing opinions from the public.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Transport (MOT), Datuk Dr. Wee Ka Siong recently during the Dewan Rakyat sitting.

It aims to enhance the system in terms of accuracy, promote transparency as well as cultivating the sense of integrity among officers and personnel of the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

For fresh graduate Wong Jin Sern, the adoption of technology into the driving test system will enable authorities to oversee footages of candidates partaking the test.

“This can be used as evidence to proof whether the candidates passed or failed their tests.

Cherry Linda, Entrepreneur.

“Bribery is such a common practice in the driving test system. People who do not know how to drive should not get their driving license just because they pay more than others.

“Such system should have been implemented a long ago. It is very much welcomed to help improve the driving test system,” said the 24 year old during an interview with TVS.

However, for Cherry Linda, a 43 year old entrepreneur, she opined differently, suggesting that the allocation for such gadgets can be spent on enforcement along with the introduction of a demerit system.

Khoo Xin Hoong, Customer Service Representative.

“Each time a person breaks road safety laws, they will accumulate demerit points.

“Through they accumulated points, the person would either have to pay a higher license renewal fee or they would have to take a refresher course on road safety,” said Cherry who justified that such method will benefit people in terms of job opportunities in enforcement.

But for a younger Khoo Xin Hoong, the use of technology would see a drop in corruption as it does not require the use of manpower.

Khoo believes by implementing a tech-savvy system, the misuse of power could be eradicated

“It is a more efficient system when there is a need to carry a cross-check between candidates and JPJ officers,” said the 24 year old Customer Service Representative
