Miri, September 24: Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg believes that the study of astronomy will generate high economic benefits to the state.
As such, the state government has expanded its resources in the field by establishing the Miri Astronomy Centre.
“This astronomy centre will be used as a research centre and I want to encourage all of our students, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, to study astronomy,” said Abang Johari during the officiation of Falak Centre Luak Esplanade here.
The centre is worth RM4.5 million and began its primary construction phase on September 5 in 2019, was completed on July 13 of this year.
Abang Johari regarded astronomy as an important field of study as it is closely related to information, technology and communication.
Currently, the centre is used by the Sarawak Mufti Department’s (JMNS) Astronomy Division for ‘rukyah’ (moon sighting) and preparations for prayer times.
“I want to welcome university students to come to the centre to experience first hand in observing natural phenomena such as the solar and lunar eclipse as well as to conduct research related to climate change and astronomy,” said Abang Johari.
With the Miri Astronomy Centre, Abang Johari stated that a more accurate prediction of possible natural disasters such as flood can be made via the movement of the moon and stars.
The astronomy centre will also be a potential destination for an astro-tourism centre, attracting both domestic and foreign visitors.
