“It is not an offence” – Abdul Rahman Junaidi

KUCHING, SEPTEMBER 14: Latching a pad lock on the Satok Suspension Bridge is not an offence nor it is deemed as an act of vandal.

This matter was rectified by the Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office for Islamic Affairs and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

However, he discourage such practice saying it is not a culture that should be inculcated within our society, despite it being a common practice in other parts of ASEAN countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and more.

The first love padlock latched by Puteri and Atyl that went viral on social media recently, was removed.

“When this phenomena occurred at our Satok bridge, a lot of people are concerned that such action would spoil the beauty of bridge.

“In Kuching, if people were to come to the bridge just to latch a pad lock, this is not the culture we want to inculcate in the society,” said Dr Rahman when contacted by TVS.

He also noted that the bridge is currently under the purview of the Works Department (JKR).

Therefore, DBKU is not able to issue rules and regulations for civilians when they use the bridge.

“Once the bridge has been handed over to DBKU fully, we will discuss with the mayor, director and all relevant officers on the do’s and don’ts.

“This will cover things that shouldn’t be placed on the bridge to even littering that has been an ongoing problem,” added Rahman.

He assured the public, once formalities are dealt with, the guidelines will be published.
