BINTULU: The Bintulu Port Authority (BPA) handed RM1 million to the Sarawak Disaster Relief Fund to alleviate the government’s burden as the nation faces the unprecedented battle against Covid-19.
Its Chairman, Robert Lawson Chuat, said the contribution was part of the BPA’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
“The contribution is intended to assist the State Government, in particular, the State Disaster Management Committee, in dealing with the pandemic as well as accelerating the vaccination programme,” he said in a statement today.
“The BPA has always supported the efforts undertaken by the State Government in dealing with the pandemic,” he added.
Robert said, apart from contributions in the form of necessities channelled to the frontliners, the BPA has also been assisting in terms of manpower at several vaccination centres in Bintulu.
Annually, the BPA also allocates funds to aid the less fortunate as well as to construct and upgrades basic facilities.
It also provides scholarships to ten students under the 20th Cleft Lip and Palate Project, a charity programme to help cleft-lipped patients.
Chuat pointed out that the CSR programmes also cover environmental rehabilitation activities such as the deployment of artificial reefs in Bintulu in collaboration with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC).
“Recognising the impact of port operations on the environment, the BPA is committed in the efforts to preserve marine life, and reduce negative impacts on marine life as well as carbon emissions from port activities,” he said.
“This programme is crucial for the survival of marine ecosystems especially the growth of coral reefs and also fish breeding.”
BPA is confident this project will bring enormous benefits in the future to the state, especially in the fishing industry.
