KUCHING: As the number of cases continue to surge due to the highly infectious Delta variant, Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is working on setting up more venues in Kuching to be used as COVID-19 quarantine and low-risk treatment centres (PKRCs).
Earlier today, SDMC’s Chairman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, visited two schools that could possibly be set up as PKRCs.
He was accompanied by SDMC’s advisor, Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy State Secretary, Datuk Ik Pahon, Education Department Director Dr Norsiah Suhaili, State Health Deputy Director Dr Rosmawati Ariffin, and Kuching Resident Sherrina Hussaini.
According to Uggah, non-severe cases, under Categories 1, 2, and 3, are to be placed at the PKRCs, where patients will be cared for by doctors and nurses, whereas for more severe cases, under Categories 4 and 5, the patients will be admitted to hospitals.
In his briefing to Uggah, Dr Khairul Rezzuan, from the Kuching Health Department, said there are currently ten PKRCs in Kuching with 2,062 beds.
“We are looking at opening a few more which will give us another 1,356 extra beds. We hope to gradually increase the number of centres to give us a targeted 3,828 beds. In addition, for areas outside Kuching District like Lundu, Bau, Samarahan, Simunjan and Serian, we are targeting a total of 2,023 beds. These will give us a grand total of 5,851 beds in the Southern Zone,” said Dr Khairul.
