JAKARTA, August 2: Two Sumatran tigers recovering from COVID-19 were let out of their isolation cages and shown to the media on Sunday, at Jakarta Zoo.
The tigers had tested positive in mid-July and investigations were underway to find out how they became infected.
“We do not do this (checking) on animals that do not have clinical symptoms, but in the future it is possible that we might make checks for all animals so that we know more about their situation,” says zoo veterinarian, Endah.
The two tigers, 9 year old Tino and 12 year old Hari were tested after both showed flu-like symptoms, had trouble breathing and lost their appetites, the zoo veterinarian said.
Tino and Hari went through 10 to 12 days of treatment and were gradually showing signs of recovery.
Fortunately, no keepers or zoo staff had tested positive for COVID-19.
