All About Malaysian ‘Flying Fish Prince’, Welson Sim

The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games have turned many into a frenzy these past couple of days. After being postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Olympics began on the 23rd of July with a spectacular opening ceremony.

Welson Sim whose actual name is Welson Sim Wee Sheng was one of the Malaysian delegates at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games opening ceremony.

His four-second appearance on screen was enough to capture the hearts of the netizens not only in Malaysia but also in China and Thailand. He became the talk of the town after his photos went viral. Here are a few fun facts about the dashing Malaysian athlete.

Sarawak-born swimmer

Welson Sim was born in Kuching, Sarawak. He attended Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Batu Lintang and then transferred to Bukit Jalil Sports School when he was 15.

He began training when he was just 11

When he was at the age of 10, he learnt swimming as a hobby. His parents encouraged him so he could overcome his asthmatic problems.

Two years later, he decided that it was something he wanted to do as a profession, to be a professional swimmer.

He rides motorbike

Welson is an all-rounder. Besides swimming, his other hobby is riding a motorbike. In October 2020, he fell off his motorbike and injured his left arm. However, the incident did not stop him from competing and trying his best in the Tokyo Olympics this year.

First Malaysian Swimmer to be Qualified for 2 Category A events at the Olympics

He was the first Malaysian male swimmer to qualify for the Olympics under Category A in two events for the 200m and 400m freestyle in Rio 2016.

Although Welson did not make the cut for the 200m and 400m freestyle events during this year’s 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, he did not feel discouraged.

His mother is his biggest supporter

Welson’s mother has always been very supportive. From taking his first swimming lessons to cheer him on throughout his journey as Malaysia’s national swimmer.
