A Disney Geek at Heart, Always.

ByDayang Sorfina

WAKING up every Saturday morning, perched in front of the TV still in my pyjamas, spending the day with my favourite Disney movies- this childhood memory still vividly lives on in my mind until today..

Growing up, screen time was only limited to weekends, and I remember binge-watching cartoons and movies at every chance I had. From princesses to friendly monsters, just the sight of the Magic Kingdom never failed to excite me every single time.

Here are some of my favorite movies, watched countless times up to recent times.

Beauty And The Beast (1991)

From dancing teapots to talking candlesticks, Beauty and The Beast is a joy to watch. It depicts the story of a lovely young girl named Belle, who goes off to rescue her father from the imprisonment of the Beast. The Beast, once a handsome young prince, was cursed for his arrogance which can only be broken by true love.

Belle showed true courage when she sacrificed herself to stay in the Beast’s castle in exchange for her father’s freedom. This all-time classic taught us that kindness and compassion triumphs over everything including the sacrifices that one is willing to make for their parents.

The Lion King (1994)

I remember singing Hakuna Matata repeatedly after watching that iconic scene showcasing the transition of Simba from a cute little cub to a dashing lion alongside his best buddies, Pumba the warthog and Timon the meerkat.

As I grew up, I realised how different in nature their friendship was, a carnivorous lion together with an omnivorous warthog and meerkat. This is what friendship actually is, especially in this beautiful country of Malaysia where friendship transcends all races and backgrounds.

Toy Story (1995)

Who else took a peek at their toys to check if they started moving and dancing when you left the room? I know I did! As a kid, I have always imagined that my teddy bears and dolls would have a party when I’m not around and would pretend to be inanimate when I’m back.

Toy Story made me want to go on adventures like the ones that Woody, Buzz, Mr Potato Head, Hamm, Slinky and the gang had in the movie!

Here’s a fun fact, Toy Story was also the world’s first computer animated feature film! Nominated in the Academy Award Best Original Screenplay, Toy Story is also the first animated film recognized for its screenwriting.

Monsters, Inc. (2001)

Sulley and Mike are known to be Top Scarers at Monsters, Inc in the city of Monstropolis. Children’s screams are vital in powering up the city and it is the monster’s job to scare them. Everything changed for the duo when they found a child named Boo that escaped to their world.

Sulley and Mike had to find a way to bring Boo back to her world but it wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be.

As we follow the adventures of Sulley and Mike, it turns out that not all monsters are evil or bad as depicted by many. Monsters, Inc. taught us to not judge a book by its cover when you have yet to know someone. The person that may look frightening to you may be the person with the biggest heart. Remember to always be compassionate and positive whenever possible.

Frozen (2013)

The movie that took the world by storm. Everywhere you went, it was a Frozen frenzy. Little girls were asking their parents for Frozen’s merchandise, from school bags, t-shirts to even princess dresses!

The movie tells the tale of Elsa, who couldn’t control her superpowers of turning everything she touched, as the title suggests, frozen. Everyone saw her as the ice princess and she isolated herself into the woods creating a magical kingdom of her own. Her sister, Anna, believes otherwise and is determined in bringing her sister back to the kingdom of Arendelle.

Frozen proves that blood is thicker than water when frozen Anna saves Elsa from being killed by Hans. Elsa’s unconditional love for her sister brought Anna back to life.

The movie brings a message that true love is not only formed by the typical boy meets girl story, but it comes in various forms be it family ties, friendship and also romance.
