Body of Missing Diver Karen Chong Found

KUCHING, APRIL 22: The body of diver Karen Chong, 31, who went missing last Saturday after she had gone for a solo dive off Pulau Satang has been found today.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak Deputy Director of Operations Capt Yousry Yaali said Chong’s body was found about 52km from her last known location.

Chong’s body was found by local fishermen who spotted Chong’s body  around 9am about 16.4 nautical miles north of Tanjung Po.

”It is believed that the victim had drifted at a distance of 32 nautical miles or 52km from the last position she solo-dived.

“They then contacted the SAR (search and rescue) team who were around the location during that time,” he told a press conference at the Telaga Air jetty today.

He added that Chong’s body was identified by her family members based on the watch she was found wearing.

“The search area in the sea from the first day to today covered some 1630.66 nautical miles with a search and rescue team comprising 207 personnel,” he said.

The search and rescue (SAR) operations was called off at 1.35pm today.

Chong’s body was later brought to Lundu Hospital at around 1pm for a post-mortem.
